Bala Brook is a retreat centre set in a wildlife-rich landscape on the edge of Dartmoor. The biodiversity here is created by the variety of habitats which includes areas of broad-leaved woodland, scrub, wildflower meadow and grassland.
The Wild About Nature @ Bala Brook Bioblitz is a fantastic 24 hours spent with like-minded nature nerds of varying experience, united by their passion for nature. The aim is to identify as many species as possible across this abundant piece of land and rekindle our connection with nature and each other. From bat detecting and moth trapping to birding, wildlife tracking and searching for bugs it is a great opportunity to learn, share and explore.
This year we recorded over 160 species of wildflowers, grasses, insects, birds and mammals.
Thanks to the kind and generous hospitality at Bala Brook the event was a huge success and it inspired me enormously. Aside from identifying countless species, I spent time watching treecreepers build a secret nest, searched for signs of otters along the riverbank and enjoyed the kind of peace that can only be found in nature. It was incredibly moving to sit a while with the red deer stag that visits the wood and to experience the dawn chorus.
I was particularly inspired by the time I spent teaching others about the wonders of nature. Opening up a world of joy and interest in those who have not connected with nature for a long while, or indeed never before, not only ignites in them a desire to learn more, but inspires a deeper engagement and a passion to protect it.
